NUCLEAR POWER ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
The Nuclear Power Electrical Equipment Certification Program is being developed collaboratively by ICAP and the IEEE Nuclear Power Engineering Committee (NPEC), and is based on IEEE P60780-323™ and other related IEEE nuclear standards. This program will implement certification initiatives for both Class 1E (IEEE), and Important to Safety (IEC) components to nuclear qualification standards.
Failures in design, qualification testing, or the validity of test results have a greater impact than ever on the nuclear power industry. Deficiencies in any of these areas can result in a large number of nuclear units being temporarily or permanently shut down. Entire countries can be adversely affected, and the economic and social cost would be devastating. Conformance with IEEE standards has never been more necessary than it is today.
The adoption of IEEE Conformity Assessment Program for Nuclear qualification standards is the next step in improving nuclear safety worldwide. Compliance with the Nuclear Power Electrical Equipment conformity assessment program will help ensure that only certified components meeting the most widely accepted qualification standards are used. The NPEC CASC was formed in October 2014 and includes subject matter experts from utilities, regulators, manufacturers, testing laboratories and independent consultants. The committee has international representation from Asia, Europe and North America.
